When is it worth choosing industrial 3D printing instead of conventional CNC machining?

Industrial 3D printing is worth using when a part needs to be quickly produced, handled and tested: for fit checks, prototypes or comparing multiple versions. This way, the decision is not made based on a drawing, but on actual installation and use.
The technology also enables the manufacturing of parts that cannot be produced with conventional machining, or only with significant compromises. It is especially useful for complex geometries, internal contours and closed cavities, as well as for built-in elements that cannot be removed from the finished part without damage.
The key to 3D printing is accurate design. It is important to consider what the part needs to withstand, where it makes contact, what the critical dimension is, and what environment it will operate in. The goal is for the first print to fit properly.
We rely on over 30 years of 3D design experience: we design the geometry so that printing is fast and the part is usable, including edges, mounting, access and the need for post-processing.
+1 tip
The most common pitfall is that the size of 3D printed holes and fits may differ, often being undersized, so it is worth designing with machining allowance and post-machining in mind.
We typically recommend manufacturing for prototypes, tests and complex parts when speed and cost-effectiveness are decisive. With short lead times, we can provide parts for testing, installation or as a temporary solution until final manufacturing, such as machining, is completed.
Printing can also be used effectively for production support: quick replacement or modification of custom fixtures, fitting elements, inspection templates, protective elements and guide elements. In this case, it can be an advantage that there is no need to calculate with a “classic” tool manufacturing lead time, while the process still remains manageable.

Before requesting a quote, show us your problem. Through logical design, we find the most cost-effective solution.
You can bring a technical drawing, a sample part or even just an initial idea. We discuss it, design it and manufacture the part.
We design the part exactly to your needs: durable, reliable and cost-effective to manufacture.
You know what you want, and we know how to make it happen. By thinking together, we find the best solution.
If we can help with engineering design, custom or small-batch part manufacturing, or if you would like to request a quote, please get in touch with us. A member of our team will call you back within one business day. Thank you!
We carry out precision CNC turning and CNC milling for custom and small-batch manufacturing, typically for machine parts, fixtures and equipment. We work based on technical drawings, but we can also design and manufacture parts from sample parts or initial concepts.
We manage the full design and manufacturing workflow in-house, including material selection and tolerances. Our goal is to produce parts that are accurate, easy to assemble and cost-effective to manufacture, while also operating reliably.
With over 30 years of engineering and 3D design experience, we provide fast, reliable solutions to technical problems. You can rely on us whether you already have a finished technical drawing, or only a sample part, sketch or on-site information is available.
The core of our engineering support is that we handle the logic of design and manufacturing together: we clarify the critical points, provide recommendations for more cost-effective manufacturability, and, if needed, also support acceptance with measurement documentation.
